Baobab
Known as the “tree of life” in its stunningly beautiful native Africa, one can only imagine the significant role the majestic Baobab tree has played for thousands of years. Throughout the average lifespan of over one thousand years (!!), each tree generously shares its fruits and water, as well as provides shelter and traditional healing remedies for local communities and wildlife.
Baobab’s nourishing fruits have been valued in Africa for centuries and boast of immune boosting vitamins, antioxidants, and strengthening minerals. The baobab fruit has six times as much vitamin C as an orange, 50% more calcium than spinach, and its antioxidant activity is four times that of a kiwi. It is an excellent source of vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus, and the seeds are packed with protein.
Baobab’s clear, golden yellow oil is extracted in a single cold pressing process, allowing this lightly nutty liquid to retain its unusually rich nutritional profile. Its powerful antioxidants provide the skin protection against free radical damage, therefore slowing down the skin’s visible aging process. Celebrated for its extremely high content of Vitamin C, the oil helps to maintain skin’s collagen production, encourages skin cell regeneration, improves elasticity and firmness, and accelerates the healing process of wounds and scars. Essential fatty-acids deeply moisturize the skin, effectively treating and healing inflammatory conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and acne.
Bakuchiol
Derived from the seeds and leaves of Eastern Asia’s ‘babchi’ plant (officially the psoralea corylifolia plant), bakuchiol has been a mainstay in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese skin-healing treatments for centuries.
It’s long been loved for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties – the same characteristics that have led scientists to take a closer look at it in recent years.
While it doesn’t have the same make-up as retinol (it doesn’t come from vitamin A) bakuchiol’s effect on skin is remarkably similar hence the term ‘retinol alternative.’
It’s been found to improve skin brightness, sort uneven skin tone, up plumpness, minimise enlarged pores, boost firmness, smooth out texture and lessen fine lines. In short, it offers all the same plus points as retinol – but with less risk of irritation.
“Bakuchiol has been shown to activate a number of chemical pathways in skin cells that ultimately lead to improved collagen production, decreased collagen breakdown and reduction of melanin (pigment) synthesis. The overall net effect seems to be an improvement in fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation which are commonly associated with the natural ageing process of the skin.
The magic of bakuchiol is that it’s tolerated by all. Whether you’re dry, dehydrated, oily or sensitive, you’re much more likely to get on with it than you are retinol.
Borage
Borage oil comes from the borago officinalis plant that is native to the Mediterranean. The plant (adored by bees) is otherwise known as ‘starflower’ thanks to its beautiful blue star-shaped flowers that accompany the distinctive fuzzy red stems. The entire plant, including the flowers, leaves and seeds, are often used medicinally (dubbed the ‘herb of gladness’ because it used to be used to treat depression). But the oil itself comes from pressing the seeds, hence its interchangeable name ‘Borage seed oil.’
The key benefit of borage seed oil is its sky-high concentration of a type of essential fatty acid called gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). Blackcurrant oil and evening primrose oil are often lauded as excellent sources of this, but Borage oil actually boasts almost twice the concentration, gram for gram. We’re talking around 17-20% GLA in Borage oil vs evening primrose oil’s 7-10%.
This makes it a saviour at soothing dry skin and boosting the skin’s natural moisture barrier leaving it more smooth, plump, supple and radiant.
Borage seed oil will treat all kinds of skin inflammation including eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis and rosacea. If you’re just feeling dry, you’ll love its calming, nourishing, redness-erasing prowess. It’s also useful in helping tackle stretch marks and acne (it’s lighter than many other oils so won’t leave your face feeling greasy).
Blackberry Seed Oil
Blackberry Seed Oil, cold pressed from blackberry seeds, is a natural source of tocopherols, tocotriencols and lutien and is packed with the vital phytosterol beta-sitosterol. Blackberry Seed Oil contains about 90% unsaturated fatty acids, 20% of which are omega-3's.
Blackberry Seed Oil is well suited for use in a wide array of cosmetic and personal care applications that include formulations intended to support problematic, damaged, maturing and sensitive skin. This luxurious berry seed oil is also packed with a veritable laundry list of skin-healthy vitamins and nutrients, including but not limited to Vitamins A, C, and E; phytosterols; essential fatty acids; and Ellagitannins. In addition to killing acne-causing bacteria, Ellagitannins are super soothing to skin lesions, rashes, rosacea, and eczema. Additionally, Blackberry Seed Oil also has broad-spectrum UV-protectant properties and can be used to make your own sunscreen blend.
Though it is packed with fatty acids, Blackberry Seed Oil oil is light and doesn't leave a greasy residue, making it great for dry and oily skin types. It can be added to soaps and exfoliants, giving them a lovely, rich texture. With its high content of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, and Vitamin E,
Blue Tansy
I am often asked what my favorite ingredient is to work with, and while it can feel a bit like choosing between children, blue tansy wins without question. This magical oil is the single most powerful ingredient I use and it is the one plant I go to when it's time to get serious. My own highly reactive skin changed dramatically after discovering its benefits over a decade ago.
Of all the active compounds found in blue tansy, chamazulene (a mighty anti-oxidant) and a-bisabolol are known powerhouses famous for their anti-histaminic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties. Effective for treating a plethora of conditions ranging from eczema to sun damage, blue tansy acts on a cellular level, relieving heat to reduce skin inflammation. Additionally, a-bisabolol compounds act as a catalyst, helping our other active ingredients, such as our helichrysum, to better penetrate the skin and offer its highest possible efficacy.
Applied topically, blue tansy oil works magic to clear rashes and allergic reactions, psoriasis, rosacea, and all forms of acne. With its unparallelled ability to bring peace to troubled complexions, it is like a meditation and spa vacation for your skin. Equally captivating is blue tansy’s extensive contribution to the long-studied emotional benefits that come with aromatherapy and alternative medicine practices.
High resonance blue tansy is called on to help combat depression, reduce anxiety, heal sleep disorders and insomnia, and soften the feeling of being out of control. Used therapeutically, blue tansy releases the stuck emotions of anger and allows for more flow in our lives. We are able to let go, feel less overwhelmed and more at one with ourselves.
Cacao Butter
If I have a signature as a formulator, the glory of this bean is certainly a part of it. I believe in cacao as more than just a special sweet treat or even as an ingredient to lend a hunger-inducing aroma to all but one formula in my collection.
Exceptionally high in antioxidants, raw cacao blocks free radicals, protecting skin against damage to collagen and elastin while promoting and renewing skin cell tissue. Cacao contains omega 6 fatty acids and raw enzymes, both of which help in cellular repair and rejuvenation. Topical use increases blood flow to the skin, reducing inflammation and redness, slowing the visible aging process, and supporting healthy moisture content.
Camellia
Camellia’s rich history can be traced back over 5000 years to roots in China and Japan. The oil has played an important role in Geishas’ beauty routines for centuries and is still a staple ingredient for natural beauty potions in Asia today. There are over 20,000 varieties of this famed plant! While green tea is made from the leaves of camellia sinensis, our golden yellow oil is gently extracted from the seeds of camellia oleifera. Also known as tea seed oil, it shares many powerful antioxidant compounds with green tea in addition to nourishing fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Camellia’s high antioxidant content offers the skin much-needed protection from free radicals and environmental aggressors, therefore reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, this light and easily assimilated oil is a significant source of Vitamin E and monounsaturated fatty acids, making it deeply nourishing, calming, and healing. Camellia oil’s astringent and anti-inflammatory properties offer great relief for inflamed skin and increase the wound healing and cell regenerating process.
Carrot Seed Oil
Carrot Seed Essential Oil is steam distilled from the dried seeds of the Daucus carota botanical.
Used in aromatherapy applications, Carrot Seed Oil stimulates circulation as well as brain and nerve functions. Its warm, earthy, woody, and herbaceous scent has a soothing, refreshing, and grounding effect that is known to diminish feelings of fatigue, weakness, anxiety, and stress.
Used cosmetically, Carrot Seed Oil repairs skin damage, tones muscles and tissue, and tightens skin to prevent it from sagging. By removing bodily toxins, it boosts immunity, reduces muscle and joint inflammation, and addresses fluid retention.
Used medicinally, Carrot Seed Essential Oil lowers blood pressure, facilitates the healing of infected skin and wounds, soothes sore throats and hiccups, and alleviates ailments caused by viruses.
Carrot Seed Oil works as a supporting and protective agent that not only enhances skin health but that also repairs damage on skin that has been exposed to pollution and environmental stress, which leads to symptoms of aging. Furthermore, it stimulates the growth of new tissue and new skin, thus promoting a clearer, brighter, evenly toned complexion. By contributing moisture, it relieves skin from irritation associated with ailments such as acne, boils, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and sores, leaving skin looking and feeling smooth, firm, nurtured, revitalized, and generally healthy. Regular use of Carrot Seed Essential Oil on the dry and cracked skin can result in the softening of calluses, the faster healing of scars, the calming of irritation, and the fading of redness and unwanted marks such as age spots.
Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiquinone or CoQ10) is a fat-soluble substance found in almost every tissue in your body. Your body naturally produces a lot of it.
As an antioxidant: Coenzyme Q10 can go around mopping up reactive free radicals before they muck up your cells. Free radicals are generated in normal cell processes and by environmental stressors (UV, pollution), and when they react with parts of your body they’re not meant to, the damage can accumulate and show up as signs of aging.
It’s also expected that, like other antioxidants, coenzyme Q10 could help prevent the inflammation and wrinkling caused by the radicals formed in your skin after sun exposure. Cultured human skin cells treated with coenzyme Q10 suffered less damage when exposed to UVA and UVB light, and coenzyme Q10 prevented UVA-induced antioxidant decrease in elderly people’s skin.
Treating Wrinkles: As you get older, the levels of coenzyme Q10 in your body decreases, with peak levels occurring in your early 20s. It also decreases when you’re stressed or sick. It’s thought that this could lead to sagging skin, wrinkles and loss of firmness and elasticity.
So logically, you could potentially undo this by supplementing your skin with a coenzyme Q10-containing skincare product. And like most other antioxidants, it looks like it mostly acts on the upper layers (epidermis) rather than the deeper layers (dermis), with 10 times as much coenzyme Q10 found in the epidermis.
Copaiba
Inhale the positive moments of your day and let everything else go with Copaiba essential oil. Copaiba has a friendly, sweet aroma that encourages easy breathing. Copaiba oil-resin has been used as a native folk remedy dating back to the 16th century by the tribes of northeastern Brazil. The balsam and its essential oil are used as fixatives in soap perfumes and fragrances. The resin is burned in ceremonies for physical and spiritual healing, and many forms of the extract can be found in nearly every marketplace in South America. Native to Brazil, the Copaiba evergreen tree grows up to 100 feet in height and sprouts yellow flowers that are followed by reddish fruit. By drilling holes into the trunk of the tree, resin is extracted and through a steam distillation process the essential oil is captured. A single tree may offer up to twelve gallons of oil seasonally.
Cypress Essential Oil
Cypress essential oil is obtained from the needle-bearing tree of coniferous and deciduous regions — the scientific name is Cupressus sempervirens. The cypress tree is an evergreen, with small, rounded and woody cones. It has scalelike leaves and tiny flowers. This powerful essential oil is valued because of its ability to fight infections, aid the respiratory system, remove toxins from the body, and work as stimulate that relieves nervousness and anxiety.
Cypress Essential Oil contains camphene a strong antiseptic that speeds up the healing process of wounds and infection
Cypress Essential Oil has both haemostatic and styptic properties. This means that it can stop blood flow and promote clotting whilst also constricting blood vessels to stop excessive blood flow.
To this end, not only is Cypress Oil great for quick healing, but it also improves circulation.
For an all-round treatment to improve respiratory processes, Cypress Essential Oil is highly effective.
As an expectorant, Cypress Oil clears up congestion and eliminates phlegm to help you breathe easier. Furthermore, this powerful oil can tone up the respiratory system and increase lung efficiency for long-term benefits.
Cypress essential Oil can induce feelings of relaxation and provide a mild sedative effect. This can work to combat the effects of stress, anxiety and even depression, boosting mood and stimulating happiness.
Evening Primrose
Organic Evening Primrose Oil is beautifully rich and absorbs well. Helps to promote skin softness and suppleness. Great for mature skin and can benefit problem skin types.
Evening Primrose (oenothera biennis) is a common plant with yellow flowers which only open in the evening, hence the name. Cold-pressing the seeds produces Evening Primrose Oil and ensures the maximum nutrients are retained.
It is very rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and Omega 6 fatty acids. These help your body to maintain healthy skin and nails and produce prostaglandins. A deficiency of these will cause dryness, wrinkles and aging whilst making your skin more prone to damage. Essential fatty acids help combat these issues and nourish your skin to leave it feeling soft and supple. Evening primrose oil is a wonderful moisturizer.
The rich texture softens skin and helps with moisture retention.
This makes it especially beneficial for dry skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. It penetrates well, helping to soften skin and promote suppleness.
Evening primrose oil is great for general skin health by supplying skin with nutrients and healthy fats. These can help your skin appear more youthful and prevent wrinkles.
Organic Evening Primrose Oil also has good anti-inflammatory properties. This helps reduce redness, swelling and itching. Whilst assisting dry skin conditions this can also benefit acne.
Evening Primrose is known for reducing hormone imbalances and applying a few drops to facial skin can help reduce and heal spots and pimples.
Frankincense
Boswellia Serrate is a tree native to India that produces special compounds found to have strong anti-inflammatory, and potentially anti-cancer, effects. Among the valuable Boswellia tree extracts that researchers have identified, several stand out as being most beneficial, including terpenes and Boswellic acids, which are highly anti-inflammatory and protect over healthy cells.
Frankincense has the ability to strengthen skin and improve its tone, elasticity, and defense mechanisms against bacteria or blemishes, as well as to protect skin's appearance as it matures. It may help tone and lift skin, reduce the severity of scars and acne, and heal wounds. It is also considered beneficial for fading stretch marks, surgery scars, marks associated with pregnancy, and for the healing of dry and cracked skin. Studies suggest that it’s the pentacyclic triterpene (natural, steroid-like) structure of frankincense oil that contributes to its soothing effect on irritated skin and its ability to reduce redness and skin irritation.
It’s also believed that the beautifully aromatic oil transmits messages to the limbic system of the brain, which is known to influence the nervous system. When inhaled, frankincense has been shown to reduce heart rate and high blood pressure, and lessen the symptoms of anxiety and chronic stress with its calming, grounding scent. This natural sleep aid helps open breathing passages, allowing you to ease into a gentle sleep.
Geranium Rose
When I think of geranium flowers, I’m transported to visions of Europe, where windows and balconies of historical buildings are overflowing with these bright, happy flowers. However, the variety that we use for our treats, Pelargonium Graveolens, is part of the Pelargonium genus and has no resemblance to the common geranium. The difference is significant as Pelargonium Graveolens has superior skin healing properties that are unique to this variety.
Native to southern Africa, this aromatic evergreen shrub has been used for centuries by tribal healers, and to this day, is a popular remedy among herbal practitioners to treat everything from a sore throat to digestive issues and skin inflammation.
Geranium rose’s antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects are thought to come from gallic acid and other phenols, which are antioxidant compounds that play a protective and healing role in skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Further, the high antioxidant content of this precious, rosy-scented oil protects against the effects of damaging free radicals on the skin cells. Its astringent and cicatrisant properties not only tone the skin, but effectively reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and fine lines.
Helichrysm
When you learn Helichrysum comes from the Greek “Helios,” meaning the sun, and “chrysos,” signifying gold, you are right to assume this must be a magical herb. Helichrysum has been appreciated for its powerful healing benefits for centuries. Some sources even suggest it was offered to Greek Gods.
Native to the Mediterranean region in Europe, Helichrysum has been a staple in traditional medicine thanks to its powerful anti-inflammatory properties and high antioxidant content. Once picked, this beautiful flower retains its distinctively vibrant yellow color without fading or withering, which explains why it’s also referred to by the names “Immortelle” or “Everlasting.”
The “everlasting” traits of Helichrysum are exactly why I utilize this powerful flower. Helichrysum’s unique chemical compounds, such as curcumene, di-ketones, and neryl-acetate make this herb a superior skincare treatment that offers unparalleled anti-inflammatory and regenerative powers. Helichrysum stimulates the production of healthy skin cells, combats metabolic cellular aging, and therefore effectively reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars. This wonder plant is also an effective remedy in cases of burned or sun-damaged skin thanks to its potent, pain-relieving abilities and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, the anti-fungal and anti-microbial effects of this “Sun Gold” oil are said to offer protection from various skin irritations, including rashes and other infections.
Sourcing - Did you know that it takes over 2200 pounds of plant material to produce only 2.2 lb of this precious oil? This makes Helichrysum one of the most expensive and labor-intensive herbs to procure, and as an unfortunate result comes with a history of adulteration. We therefore ensure that we only source our organic oil in the most reliable way possible, which is from the manufacturer directly. Ours is a family-run company located in the South of France, known for their unparalleled ethics and quality
Lavender Fine
One of the most studied, recognized, and versatile flowers, lavender’s rich history as a medicinal, culinary, and spiritual plant dates back thousands of years. Native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, Romans were said to have used the holy flower to scent their baths, beds, clothes, and even hair, a fact that is reflected in the Latin root of the herb’s name “lavare” meaning “to wash.” Besides Romans, many ancient cultures and healers around the world have used lavender in medicinal treatments and religious ceremonies.
In the Middle Ages, it was believed that spouses who placed sprigs of lavender between their bed sheets would never argue. Tibetan monks and Ayurvedic healers are said to have used these purple beauties to treat depression and calm the mind, while in European folk medicine, lavender tea was prescribed to relieve insomnia and tension. It’s been proven in modern medicine that the scent of lavender increases alpha waves in the area of the brain responsible for relaxation, literally helping to lull away some of our common anxieties and allowing for more sane days, and better sleep at night.
Besides its incredible aromatic and sedative properties, lavender boasts of skin healing benefits that make lavender a time-tested first aid treatment. True lavender essential oil is one of the most beneficial remedies for inflammatory conditions such as acne, dermatitis, and eczema. It’s superior anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, as well as regulate the over-excretion of sebum, increasing the healing process of scars at the same time. As a powerful antiseptic and pain reliever, lavender makes an invaluable remedy for burns, wounds, and all types of skin trauma, effectively regenerating scar tissue and the skin overall, leaving it healthy, glowing, and blemish-free.
Marula
One of Africa’s ancient botanical treasures, the marula tree has been sharing its gifts with its local communities for centuries. Indigenous to South Africa and Madagascar, marula tree belongs to the same plant family as cashew, mango, and pistachio. Marula fruit has been a staple in African cuisine for a long time, where it’s transformed into delicious juices, jams, and even alcoholic beverages, such as the famous South African cream liquor, Amarula.
Besides its yummy taste, the yellow fruit boasts of skin-beneficial nutrients and is said to contain a whopping 4 times as much vitamin C as an orange. The tree’s generosity doesn’t stop at the fruit; the nutty, golden marula oil has been widely used for its medicinal benefits and has been part of countless beauty rituals. Boasting an incredibly high content of antioxidants, including skin-boosting Vitamins C and E, marula oil provides a protective shield against damaging effects of the environment while simultaneously helping to renew healthy skin cells. Further, it increases healthy collagen production and slows down the aging process. The antibacterial properties of the antioxidants and tocopherols assist in fighting off harmful pathogens, naturally speeding up the healing process of wounds and scars. Its anti-inflammatory essential fatty acid content not only helps to deeply hydrate and nourish the skin, but also to reduce redness and improve elasticity.
Meadowfoam
Meadowfoam Seed Oil is cold-pressed from the tiny seeds of Limnanthes alba, which produces an oil with superb antioxidant properties and skin softening benefits.
Meadowfoam seed oil is one of nature’s lesser-known gifts to skincare. While its name might sound strange, this peculiar-sounding oil might just be one of the best things anyone can add to their regular beauty routine.
In the world of cosmetics Meadowfoam seed oil is used as an emollient, meaning it helps to keep the skin feeling soft and with that sought-after satin-y texture. Apart from this, its delicate scent makes it a useful and widely-used addition to deodorising products.
A stable oil, Meadowfoam seed oil keeps its skin-loving properties for years meaning it’s a bathroom cabinet essential. Because of this, it’s also known to be a good carrier oil, helping to extend the life and efficacy of other less stable oils.
Because it’s rich in nourishing phytochemicals, Meadowfoam seed oil has impressive moisturising properties and it can help to prevent loss of moisture from the skin and hair.
This might be the best benefit of all. Meadowfoam seed oil possesses many properties that are similar to the skin’s natural oil, sebum, meaning that it’s easier for the skin to absorb. When applied on the skin Meadowfoam seed oil locks in moisture helping to prevent the over-production of sebum and, although it’s counterintuitive to what many people think of using oil on their skin, it can help minimise against blemishes.
Myrrh
Although there are many species of Myrrh, ours (Commiphora myrrha) is native to the Arabian Peninsula, Somalia, Yemen, and parts of Ethiopia. Highly prized by many ancient civilizations including the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Chinese, this precious resin was primarily used as an ingredient in incense, perfumes, for embalming, and religious ceremonies. Its rich, warm, balsamic scent and medicinal properties have been cherished by many for centuries.
To harvest the sap, myrrh trees are tapped several times a year and left to secrete its resin for about a week to ten days. Once dried and hardened, it is collected and aged even further before being sorted, graded, and sold. The resin is then either ground into a fine powder or distilled into an essential oil.
To this day, it is still one of the most widely used essential oils in aromatherapy thanks to its superior antiseptic, antimicrobial, vulnerary, and anti-fungal properties, which make myrrh the perfect natural remedy for preventing and treating wounds from infections, as well as fighting off harmful bacteria. When applied topically, its potent antioxidants help to reduce puffy or swollen skin while alleviating discomfort. A powerful antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, myrrh tones the skin, helps reduce the appearance of scars, and offers relief for skin inflammations such as acne and eczema.
Olive Squalane
Olive Squalane is a luxurious emollient used in a wide range of cosmetic and personal care formulations. Its unique chemical and physical characteristics, along with its beautifying properties for the skin, hair, nails, and lips, have made it a popular ingredient used extensively by both cosmetic manufacturers and skincare enthusiasts.
Squalene, a component of human sebum, helps lubricate and moisturize the skin and scalp while acting as a natural guard against external irritants and pollutants. Olive Squalane, on the other hand, is less prone to oxidization which improves its stability and shelf life for commercial applications.
For the skin, Olive Squalane deeply soothes and moisturizes without leaving an oily finish. It helps slow down transepidermal water loss and boosts skin moisture, making the complexion look more radiant and nourished.
Pomegranate Seed Oil
Pomegranates are fondly referred to as “The Fruit of Life” and as “Nature’s Power Fruit” for their ability to maintain and enhance many body systems and functions, thereby promoting optimal health.
Pomegranate seeds are pressed to produce Pomegranate Oil, which is known for the numerous benefits it has for skin, hair, and overall health.
Used topically in skin care, Pomegranate Seed Oil boosts collagen production, enhances skin elasticity, reduces the appearance of scarring, promotes the reversal of skin damage, and leaves lasting moisture without leaving a greasy residue.
Pomegranate Seed Oil boosts collagen production and exhibits anti-inflammatory qualities. Its ability to repair skin that is damaged, dry, or aging makes it an ideal ingredient in skin care cosmetics. Pomegranate Carrier Oil enhances skin elasticity and is known to support hormonal balance in both men and women, thereby enhancing skin texture. Aside from lending moisturizing and firming properties, it nourishes skin while offering soothing and protective properties, especially to skin that is irritated and sunburned. By stimulating cells in the outer layer of skin, Pomegranate Oil promotes the reversal of skin damage, consequently uncovering a newer layer of skin and, in so doing, promoting a more youthful look and feel. In this way, it reduces the appearance of scarring. Suitable for all skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin or clogging pores.
Ravensara
With its botanical name Ravensara aromatica, this medicinal plant of Madagascar offers so much more than its distinct awakening, camphorous aroma. Treasured as the “cure-all” on its native island off the eastern coast of Africa, this broad-leaved evergreen tree belongs to the plant family Lauraceae, which includes over 30 different species. Also known as “clove nutmeg” and “Madagascar nutmeg” for its similar looking seeds to the famous spices, it’s actually the leaves of the ravensara plant that are used to make its powerful essential oil.
If you look at its endless list of potent medicinal benefits, it’s no surprise some call ravensara the “tea tree” oil of Madagascar. With a refreshing and familiar aroma reminiscent of eucalyptus, ravensara offers the corresponding therapeutic properties one would expect it to carry. A deep inhale seems to inject a fresh breeze through your nose and has been shown to ease symptoms of respiratory distress.
As a powerful antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiseptic, this precious translucent oil has been used as a topical remedy for infections such as sores, herpes, and inflammatory conditions. It not only effectively kills harmful bacteria, but also speeds up the healing process thanks to its vulnerary properties. Ravensara is especially beneficial for sensitive skin, as its oil is non-sensitizing, non-irritating, and is said even to have the capability to gradually build a resistance against allergenic substances, which has a tonifying effect on the skin over time.
Rosehip Oil
“THE OIL OF YOUTH”
Rosehips are the tiny, reddish-orange, edible, spherical fruits that remain on a Rose bush after Roses have bloomed, lost their petals.
Rosehip Oil has been used largely in medicinal and cosmetic applications, often being regarded as the “Oil of Youth.”
Rosehip Carrier Oil is considered to be a “dry oil,” due to its thin consistency, which allows it to be easily absorbed without leaving an oily residue on the skin’s surface.
Rosehip Carrier Oil has skin brightening properties that help restore skin’s natural color and tone while lightening any unwanted dark blemishes.
Rosehip Oil effectively reduces the appearance of scars, accelerates skin regeneration, facilitates the healing of wounds and burns, and soothes skin dryness and inflammation.
Used topically, Rosehip Carrier Oil is suitable for all skin types, including skin that is sensitive, dry, oily, scarred, or damaged by UV radiation. Skin types that are oily or acne-prone will benefit more from using it sparingly, as it may aggravate such skin conditions. Rosehip Carrier Oil is reputed for its healing and anti-aging properties and is thus often featured in natural products for mature skin. It works to accelerate skin regeneration and to reduce the appearance of minor skin conditions such as those involving enlarged pores or age spots, thereby restoring and maintaining a youthful appearance. It effectively soothes skin afflicted by dryness, eczema, hyper-pigmentation, and psoriasis. This lightweight, easily-absorbed oil does not leave an oily residue on the skin’s surface. It restores elasticity to skin with wrinkles and stretch marks, minimizing the appearance of both. This “Oil of Youth” replenishes skin’s moisture by creating a protective barrier on the skin that prevents its dehydration. Applied to areas with rough skin such as knees, elbows, and calloused heels, Rosehip Carrier Oil softens skin to restore its suppleness.
The skin brightening properties of Rosehip Seed Oil help restore skin’s natural color and tone while lightening any unwanted dark blemishes caused by damage from overexposure to the sun, age spots, acne scars, or wounds. Its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant properties are known to facilitate the healing of wounds and burns by tightening the skin.
Prickly Pear Seed Oil
Pricky pear oil, also known as barbary fig seed oil, is native to Morocco just like argan oil. The process of extracting the fruit from the seeds is a lengthy operation, which can take three to four days. It is a manual operation and the season only lasts for a few months. It is worth noting that half a ton of these cactus fruits only produce one liter of prickly pear seed oil. Each seed only contains 5% oil and it is these combination of factors that makes prickly pear oil one of the most expensive beauty oils in the world.
Prickly pear oil contains the highest amount of vitamin E of any other beauty oil on the market. In fact it contains 150% more vitamin E than argan oil. This oil is also extremely rich in essential fatty acids including omega 6 and 9, antioxidants, polyphenols, amino acids and vitamin K.
Prickly pear seed oil has a high content of essential fatty acids which help calm down any inflammation and redness especially for those prone to rosacea. The oil is easily absorbed into skin and penetrates quickly without leaving any greasy residue.
This oil contains effective and potent antioxidants known as betalains which are red and yellow pigments found in plants. Prickly Pear contains the highest amount of betalains than any other plant including beetroot, Goji berries and Acai. These super antioxidant pigments help to protect skin against ageing from various types of damaging radicals which would otherwise encourage wrinkle formation.
Aside from its content of betalains, this seed oil contains amino acids which may help stimulate collagen production. Containing vitamin K, prickly pear oil helps to brighten hyperpigmentation areas such as dark spots as well as being of benefit for under-eye dark circles.
From anti-ageing to the treatment of acne, the versatility of prickly pear seed oil makes it a superb treatment oil suitable for all skin types and a great night time treat.
Schisandra Berry
Schisandra has been regarded and treasured by the Chinese Empire as a superior herb for its unparalleled powers to protect health and prolong life. A woody vine full of fruits and fragrant flowers, it is native to the moist, temperate forests of northern China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East. Schisandra is known as “wu-wei-zi,” the Chinese name for “five flavor berry,” which refers to the five flavors and corresponding elements of traditional Chinese medicine (sweet/earth, sour/wood, bitter/fire, salty/water, and pungent/metal). This unique characteristic makes Schisandra one of the fundamental herbs in Chinese Medicine and is even today highly regarded for its healing powers. For centuries it has been used as a harmonizing tonic, treating diseases of the lungs, liver, kidneys, and heart. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that it finally gained recognition as an adaptogenic herb, thanks to a number of studies which showed significant evidence of its superior, stress-protective effects and its power to increase physical stamina.
Thanks to its content of potent antioxidants, these bright red, peppercorn-sized berries support healthy cellular function and stabilize cell membranes, successfully preventing and protecting against environmental damage. Schisandra is a must for mature and sun damaged skin and its anti-inflammatory and sedative powers offer relief for hyper-reactive, stressed, and sensitive skin.
Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil
While the name may fool you into thinking this one is derived from the deep blue (it’s also known as sea berry or seaberry!), it’s actually a small berry grown on a shrub found in coastal and mountainous regions of Asia and Europe.
Records of medicinal uses of sea buckthorn go back many centuries. Not only is it mentioned in ancient Tibetan texts, but also in Ancient Greek Mythology, as well as the Indian Materia Medica and early Chinese formularies.
Sea buckthorn fruit oil is a dark red or orange-red color, with more of a viscous texture, whereas the seed oil is paler yellow or orange in color and more fluid. Both offer an array of fantastic skin benefits.
Sea buckthorn seed oil contains omega 3 and 6 in an almost perfect ratio along with omega 9 and is better suited for dry and mature skin. The fruit oil, on the other hand, contains omega 6 and the highly sought after omega 7, brilliant for aiding in skin repair and regeneration, making this oil ideal for problematic skin. It’s fast absorbing and will help to soothe inflammation and reduce redness.
Be prepared to be blown away, because this small, but mighty berry means business when it comes to nutrient content.
Sea buckthorn contains an incredible 190 nutrients and phytonutrients. In fact, its vitamin C concentrations are 12 times higher than that of an orange - who knew! If you aren’t aware, vitamin C is actually referred to as the “beauty vitamin” thanks to its ability to reduce inflammation in the skin, boost collagen for plumper, firmer skin, as well as brighten like nobody’s business!
Sea buckthorn also contains vitamins B1, B2, K, C, A, and E, folic acid, an array of powerful antioxidants and minerals.
Together these powerful nutrients and fatty acids work together to transform the skin.
Sea Buckthorn oil is just as renowned for its anti-aging benefits as it is for its skin healing benefits. Sea buckthorn repairs oxidative damage and has wonderful anti-aging properties. It hydrates the skin and promotes the formation of collagen, a structural protein essential for youthful skin. The anti-aging benefits of collagen are endless, from helping to plump the skin and prevent sagging to smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles.
With regular use of topically applied sea buckthorn oil, not only will you notice clearer and brighter skin, you will see a reduction in fine lines too, a plumper complexion and a smoother, more refined skin texture.
No matter what your skin type, you can benefit from this incredible oil.
Shea Butter
The sacred shea tree has been sharing its various gifts with countless communities in its native Africa for thousands of years. Its adventurous history is said to go back all the way to Cleopatra’s reign when the iconic, stunning ruler supposedly never traveled without her jars of the decadent butter. Besides being part of Cleopatra’s famous, luxury beauty routine, and long before it became a starring ingredient in many of today’s nourishing, natural skin care products, this special fruit has been treasured and well utilized by African cultures in numerous ways.
The shea tree's wood, for example, was said to have been used to make beautiful caskets for respected leaders, while its fruit and butter offered an essential source of nourishment and medicine for entire tribes. Its appreciation and significance in the African culture and economy continues through today, where shea butter is rightly known as “woman’s gold” as its production provides employment and income to women in 19 African nations.
The long, intensive process of bringing this fruit to its final buttery state requires much patience. Shea trees start to bear their first fruits only after a decade of growth, but once they start, they continue sharing their nourishing treasures with us for up to 200 years. After the fruits have been harvested, the nuts are removed, boiled, and extracted from their shells by hand. The containing seeds are crushed, roasted, and then beaten with water, which helps to release their famously rich fats that form into a butter.
This precious, smooth, and nutritive gift provides deep nourishment, leaving skin plump, soft, and protected. Its high content of healthy, anti-inflammatory fats are quickly absorbed, locking in the necessary moisture to ensure skin stays hydrated throughout the day. The antioxidant-rich phenolic compounds offer a great healing and soothing remedy for many inflammatory conditions, from sunburns to rashes, dermatitis, and rosacea. Shea butter’s dose of vitamins A and E are said to promote cell renewal and slow the signs of premature aging by reducing the exposure of oxidative stress in the skin. Shea Butter is said to also increase collagen production, thus restoring the skin’s natural elasticity and firmness.
